Introduction to Creative Writing

This class introduces students to the writing of fiction and poetry. You will be exposed to a variety of theory and techniques designed to help you grow as a creative writer. In each class meeting, time will be devoted to theory, discussion of technique in published works and the student’s own material.

The theoretical part of the class will include discussion of the concepts and techniques instrumental to good writing. Selected readings will also be assigned from material provided. Readings in both fiction and poetry are chosen to represent a variety of styles, authors, genres and examples of the techniques we will discuss. Hopefully, they will provide a bit of inspiration as well.

The writing portion will include in-class writing exercises and prompts plus fiction and poetry assignments to be completed outside of class and submitted for peer review. Certain criteria may be addressed but the emphasis is on the development and enjoyment of the writing process.

The course is held at the Powerhouse Community Center on the beach in Del Mar. This setting will be utilized for its ability to provide beauty, inspiration and access to “things that make me want to write.” The class will be limited to 16 students. There is no prerequisite or required texts and   writers with some experience wishing to refine their skills are welcome. An inclusive course reader will be provided with the materials fee.
