SOLANA BEACH ---- A one-book, one-city reading program called Solana Beach
Reads kicked off recently at the city's public library and will unfold over the
next two months.
It's the first time the city has done a "community read," said Mary Jane Boyd,
president of the Friends of Solana Beach Library.
The book selected is "The Devil's Highway," written by Luis Alberto Urrea. The
national best-seller tells the true story of 26 men who in May 2001 attempted to
cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona.
"It is an interesting topic," said Friends' board member Marlene Gerber, adding
that one of the criteria of the read was "create dialogue in the community."
Gerber said a number of activites have been planned at the library and the La
Colonia Community Center that tie in to the community read. Those events include
book discussions on June 10, 21 and 30 and a panel discussion June 17 called
"Fences and Borders: The Immigration Quandary."
The "read" culminates with a book signing, discussion and reception with the
author at 7 p.m. June 26 at the Solana Beach Library Earl Warren Auditorium. For
information, call (858) 755-1404.
